Thoughts on the romanization of ateji loanwords?
Our policy with katakana loanwords is not to transcribe them phonetically but to instead use the borrowed word, like "soundtrack" instead of "saundotorakku." Since ateji is basically the same thing, except writing the borrowed word with kanji, for consistency I'd think we should do the same thing for those too. Basically I just don't want to start an edit war with urutapu over 天鵞絨 being "veludo" or "biroudou." He seems to have a better understanding of Japanese than I do anyway so whatever we do's cool. Actually this specific case is interesting in and of itself because "veludo" is borrowed from Portuguese and not English. Last edited by CHz; Aug 15, 2009 at 02:53 AM. |

Yeah, I wasn't famliar with the term ateji, but I agree with taking the same approach for these as for other borrow words.

Personally I'd use Biroudo. I think most Portuguese borrow words were assimilated long ago and the now original writting/word should be just part of the etymology.
Ex. 切支丹 = Kirishitan/christian in ancient Japan, as opposed to クリスチャン = christian in modern times. Another (reverse) example (?) Recent borrowed words aren't quite assimilated the same way so we should always write them in the original language. But then again, whoever named the tracks most likely just wanted to be cool using the kanji instead of ベルベット so whatever. |

There have been edits in circle over the title. I suspect Miku's official English name uses the family-name first order, but can't find a solid evidence by now. With regard to this album in particular, however, the front, the disc and the tray scan indicate "HATSUNE MIKU" is right here.
