Information: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/switch/ad....html#20180226

We need a new media format: USB. Also, could an admin please raise the media limit to 10 or something? Not sure why it's still at 4.

Edit: USB has been added and the media limit raised. Thanks SS.

HYPE.

Almost $200 AUD. I can't believe this. I need to check the contents more carefully before I spend my money but I'm fairly certain I'll want the deluxe edition, although it's crazy.

Been saving for this though.

EDIT: Seems like the only difference between the Type A and Type B editions is the USB and CD. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Type B seems to come with the piano score and all as well.

You're right. I missed that, thanks.

I think I'll be going for Type B, with the 6 CDs. Getting a unique USB is nice and all, plus the higher quality audio does actually make up for the price if you think about it, but unless there's an extra bonus I'm missing I'm not sure whether it's worth it as such.

A few things to mention:

Tetsuya Takahashi has written lyrics for all the vocal songs, including the ANÙNA songs, I believe, which were translated by Nintendo's lackeys. Not sure if the translators for the ANÙNA songs are the same as the ones for the Jen Bird songs, but I will add them as a credit anyway.

I have compiled all the official English track names (and composer credits), so when the full track list is announced feel free to use it:

Actually I believe this was stated in an interview at one stage. I don't have a source but I recall some discussion about this going on in the Discord server I run. It was a while ago, but I guess we'll find out when the full soundtrack releases.

Hopefully we'll get official lyrics for all of the ANÙNA songs too. Seems likely since there's 120 pages planned for the booklet.

I'm being a bit nitpicky here, but I notice they're including 121 tracks on the CD (minus the five piano arrangements)--whereas 124 musical tracks have been datamined. I wonder which three tracks are being left out? (I'd imagine the beta version of "Where It All Began" is one.)

Still though, I'm stoked this has finally been officially announced!

lol more than double the price for 48kHz/24bit audio on a fucking USB stick. What a god damn joke. PS it's already sold out on a.co.jp. I guess there are 2000 suckers, rofl.

Mitsuda talks about the production process in this blog post he just published: http://www.procyon-studio.com/blog/?p=12903

Quick partial translation:
Quote:
First of all, the most difficult thing this time was the total number of songs and the length of the songs.

When you add in the jingles, the soundtrack becomes a 6 CD release.

To be honest, there are no 6 CD cases, so we had to make a special specification (also for the regular edition).

Second is the production cost. It takes a considerable budget to master 6 CDs.

Also the song titles, the ordering of the songs, the design, the mastering contract...

It took months to pull everything together (in addition to other various problems that occurred). In fact, we've been working on this since before the game was even released.

[...]

Price - Cost = Sales

This calculation completely failed. The USB edition is very expensive, but even so it's in a state of unprofitability.

Your first thought might be "Huh, really?"

The cost is not simply the USB cost, the package cost, the printing fees, and the mastering fees.

Many people were involved in creating the soundtrack this time. Their time is not free.

Our staff has been working for months to shape this release. Considering the staff's labor costs and time restrictions, it is not a very profitable product.

Our company mainly does contract work. It is not our main line of work to manufacture products. Because of this, we failed to properly evaluate the situation.

[...]

To tell you the truth, this soundtrack is a bargain (lol). It would be absolutely impossible on another label. I can say this with confidence.
Note: when he says impossible, I don't think he means it couldn't be released from another label. I think he's just saying that if it were on another label, it would be cheaper and not up to his standards.

I'd expect them to lose money on a product like this but here are some of my issues:

- Medium: A USB stick exclusively, instead of in addition to an expected medium. The justification that "they don't make 6 CD cases" increasing the cost is kind of stupid. Of course they don't, if that was such a defining cost factor, put it on a Bluray like every other release that has 5+ hours of music. Also, do people remember the copy protection bullshit they pulled with the Xenoblade Chronicles X USB stick? https://www.reddit.com/r/Xenoblade_C...es_x_ost_has_a. If they do that here it will be a travesty.
- Price: More than double the price of the 6 CD version
- Quality: 48KHz/24bit audio is a gimmick (when listening) compared to 44.1KHz/16 bit. Unless you're doing some kind of sampling or remixing with the tracks, it's barely an audible difference and you will need serious equipment to hear that difference. Also, given that pretty much every BDA (96KHz/24bit) release has just been upconverted audio anyway, I'll hold my breath that this is any different.
- Timing: Minor gripe and really not much anyone can do about it but this was posted at the worst possible times for everyone in the West with afaik little to no advanced notice.

You can tell from that blog post that this is less about a product and more about bringing the staffs art to another medium, which is fine. I personally think this is way to expensive for what you get out of it, and for what I would assume most of us want out of it (the music).

Fortunately for those of us that aren't rabid Xeno fans there are the Type B and C alternatives.

Actually no, Tiger! Tiger! will likely be combined into one track, based on what JASRAC has told us, so technically only 121 tracks were datamined. There will be 126 tracks in total.

This means that there's one song unaccounted for if we don't include the beta version of Where It All Began, as there are 104 datamined tracks in that case, while the full OST will include 105 "main tracks".

I doubt the beta version of Where It All Began will be included, but what does seem likely is that the 105th track that we haven't accounted for is the instrumental version of Drifting Soul. It was in a separate folder in the game's files when datamined, but it was used in a cutscene, so it's quite possible that it'll be included.

Yeah, they seem to have sold out.

They didn't mention anything about it being limited so it's possible that it'll come back, though it is a "deluxe" edition so it might not come back.

Other stores have Type C available now though. Glad I managed to get a preorder of Type B though.

I'm not very good at translating grammar but this is better than machine translation:

Quote:
"Something strange happened today. Xenoblade 2's gorgeous CD sold out in the blink of an eye and many of you contacted us (our company) and asked what could be done, in regards to timing. A phone call has started. I wonder if there's also a wiretap."
Someone will correct me if I've misrepresented anything but the gist of it is they are aware a lot of people were disappointed with how quickly it sold out and they are talking about it.

My understanding from the post is that they are only opening up more orders for the Deluxe Edition CD, not the USB, correct?

If anyone needs an exact time, 3/3 13:00 JST is 3/2 23:00 EST/22:00 CST/21:00 MST/20:00 PST.

Yeah, sorry. Only the deluxe CD. I should have specified that.

They aren't able to offer more of the USB edition.

It's sold out now though. I mean that's what happens with limited/deluxe editions, but it would be nice if more people could get it.

I managed to get a preorder for the deluxe CD edition when it first went up, during the first hour before it sold out for the first time, so I'm glad.

Thankfully, I managed to get a pre-order of the Deluxe Edition yesterday, but this thing really does seem really limited. I can understand the USB Type A version being really limited, but they really don't seem to be making many copies of the Type B version, either.

I only got it because of randomly seeing Mitsuda's tweet late Friday night. I'm glad he direct-linked it.

Don't understand why the 6CD edition is limited considering its shipped Worldwide. Poor Japaneses seeing their stock mostly sold to foreigners like Bayonetta nonstop climax... At least restrict these items to Japan or greatly increase the number copies.

It's exclusive to Amazon Japan. It's likely this was a factor. If it was a "limited edition", but sold through various different stores I'd assume more stock would be considered overall. I doubt it affected the decision a whole lot, but I don't claim to know how this side of the industry works, so don't quote me on any of this.
