Koichi Sugiyama's politics
Say, judging by the latest ratings, it appears belmont_yang is not quite the Sugiyama lover! He doesn't even leave him a chance.

Hah, well, to each their own I suppose. Can't say I'm a big fan of sugi myself, although ratings... who takes those seriously anyway?

On that note, I always like to bring up this link
http://studyofenglish.wordpress.com/...shington-post/ which is a rather lengthy article by Sugiyama concerning what else he puts efforts in when he's not composing music. I still like Dragon Quest, though. |

belmont_yang's average over the 70 albums he's rated is 2.34. You have to wonder if he even likes VGM.
On the article, I chalk it up to having been raised during the Japanese empire. There isn't much chance of changing his opinions at his age. |

Interesting link, Teioh, that's the first article I've seen written by Sugiyama.
And he is also director of JASRAC?? Wow, didn't know that either. Are there any other English articles with Sugiyama out there? (DQ or other) Last edited by Carl; Oct 19, 2008 at 05:34 AM. |

I'm not a huge WWII historian or anything, but it seems to me that all Sugiyama is trying to do is make the case that women who became "comfort women" did so of their own volition and were never forced into it...and, if any were (and of course some were) that the Japanese military did not condone it and punished people who were involved in such matters.
We can still say "eww, brothels for the military" and argue the moral bankruptcy of the whole endeavor, but I don't quite see a problem with what it is that Sugiyama is contending. Anyone wanna tell me what I'm missing here...? |

You missed the part where he claimed that the Nanking massacre never happened.
This is a rather sensitive topic to pursue in a composer thread though, so I'll be splitting it off to Off Topic discussion later. |

I guess that's the equivalent to someone saying the Holocaust never happened. Not in terms of numbers, but in terms of ... stubbornness?
Other than the Nanking part, the majority of the article suggests that they just had guidelines w/ comfort women, and the military/gov't did their best to stick to these guidelines. That part doesn't seem offensive at all. |

Personally, I love Sugiyama
His Orchestral renditions are amazing.
