I also wonder how the Mega Drive Mini version can be any different than the original Mega Drive version...?
Isn't the mini console just running ROMs?

There was no original Mega Drive version of Darius. Both the MD Mini and MD Cartridge versions were brand new for 2019 and 2020, respectively.

As I understand it, the Mega Drive Mini version is based on Hideki Konishi's fan port and uses his interpretation/conversion of the original arcade Darius music and sfx. The MD Cartridge version (aka Darius Extra Version) is a further enhanced/refined version of that port with WING☆ attempting to bring the sound quality and balance to parity with the original arcade sounds.

Man you're right, I had Darius II in mind, which was released on the Mega Drive.
