Default BEEP documentary film/book: featuring over 50 international game sound creators

Crowdfunding campaign to develop a book/film documentary on the history of video game sound: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...deo-game-sound Now enough big-name Japanese composers that I figured people at VGMdb would be interested in this. We've got a handful of really big names to announce over the next week too. Here's the latest news article:

Quote:
Pioneering musicologist Karen Collins recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to develop the documentary film BEEP: A History of Game Sound and an accompanying guidebook. This documentary film will take viewers on a rich audio-visual journey through the history of game music and sound, from the minimalist sounds of 1970s and 1980s arcade classics through to the surround sound orchestral soundtracks of 2014’s latest epics. It will be published together with a book that will provide an in-depth perspective on the evolution of game audio, packed full of interviews with the pioneers of game sound.

Just two weeks into its Kickstarter campaign, BEEP is two thirds of the way there thanks to the help of over 600 backers. The campaign has also inspired the attention of international press, gained the support of big-name sponsors, and added reputed managers and artists to its team. It has also organised the involvement of numerous big-name composers and sound creators. 41 names have been confirmed to be interviewed so far, among them historic game music pioneers, influential technical pioneers, insight authors, and, of course, today’s biggest freelancers. There will also be interviews with current and former audio leads at the biggest game publishers, such as Sony, Microsoft, Namco, Taito, Ubisoft, EA, and Atari. The latest people confirmed to be involved in the campaign have been announced, among them the composers and audio directors of the Lumines, Harry Potter, Wipeout, Devil May Cry, Ace Combat, LittleBigPlanet, Virtua Fighter, Lemmings, and Super Smash Bros. franchises, not to mention the S.S.T. I like this idea, but Japanese composers are underrepresented (and/or Western composers are overrepresented).

Not all the names have been announced yet. There'll be a good split of Western/Eastern composers, with about 20 full-length interviews with Eastern composers featured in the book and many on the DVD (as it's 90 minutes, we can only obviously select the best responses).

Even though they're not exactly popular here, many of the European (and to a lesser American) composers have a huge fanbase and were actually great innovators. Note that the Western composers we've selected aren't the current Hollywood ones, but more those that innovated in the 80s and 90s.

Nisto: Can't control it when composers don't get back to me, despite them agreeing to do the interview and me spending $$$ on translating questions for them. All too common and frustrating.

I'll try following up at some point. There are a few other interviews in a similar position, e.g. with Michiko Naruke, Masanori Adachi/Hirofumi Taniguchi, and MintJam.

I know VGMdb is all about completism, but really not possible for such a project due to both the documentary length and licensing issues. We've tried our best to get biggest, historic names from the industry -- and think we have done an impressive job, keeping in mind some still to be announced. However, there'll always be notable emissions, as well as lots of fringe names, who we would have wanted to feature but didn't have the opportunity or resources.

Some of these could be considered for a stretch goal or even a volume 2 if enough people ask for one! Rom Di Prisco and Nobuyoshi Sano have both been interviewed at GMO, so rest assured we're aware of their awesomeness.

Well as a huge fan of Kyd's work (fans gonna be fans heh...), do you plan to interview him at some point (as a sort of long-term plan I guess), if you don't mind me asking?

I love Kyd's works too! Both modern and historic. I'll see if we might be able to include him, maybe as a stretch goal.

Also, two stretch goals that I developed with communities like VGMdb in mind -- we're at 51k at the moment, so can get to them with quite a bit more help.

Quote:
$53K DVD extra on game music "on record". Over the years, thousands of original scores and arranged albums dedicated to game music have been released. We'll interview top record producers, visit album stores in Japan, and meet prolific album collectors.

$58K DVD extra on game music in concert. We will go behind-the-scenes at various symphonic, rock, and chiptune concerts to reflect on how game music has become a cultural phenomenon.
Four days left, so please help by backing and spreading the word. Back here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...deo-game-sound It'll be amazing. Thanks for any support!
