Thumbs up Laserdisc/LD Collecting

I recently bought a YAMAHA CDV-1700 Laserdisc player. Movies I have bought so far are...Aliens Special Widescreen Collector's Edition, new SEALED PREDATOR LD, Big Trouble in Little China (Widescreen), The Terminator (Widescreen) & (Fullscreen) movies and T2 Special Edition LD, also Back to the Future Letterboxed Edition. I can't wait to watch these! =D

Laserdisc owns. wtf is blu-ray? My Laserdisc player eats blu-ray players for breakfast! Any Laserdisc collectors out here?!

***update...got a Pioneer Elite DVL-91****

Yeah, uh, not really.

Laserdiscs are kinda neat to collect because of the great packaging, but in terms of actually watching the movies, the audio/video quality of Blu-ray destroys them.

I was joking man. Take it easy, there is no debate. It's pretty obvious that LD's are dead/old format. But I don't care, I love Laserdiscs & my LD player has S-Video and Digital Optical out, so I'm happy.

Some movies I just ordered today...=D

The Fifth Element Deluxe Widescreen (Used)

Red Sonja Widescreen (factory sealed)

Stargate Widescreen Edition (THX) (still in shrink wrap)

Predator 2 Widescreen (still in shrink wrap)

ARMY OF DARKNESS Letterbox Edition (used)

Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom (Widescreen) (used)

ALIEN 3 WIDESCREEN EDITION (used)

I did a neat little comparison between a Laserdisc and a DVD.

Laserdiscs obviously owns all... =D

I love these two movies, they were as great then as they are now (the 80's kicked ass)! The Monster Squad is a pretty hard to find Laserdisc though. I recommend picking it up if you can!

Most ppl hate these two movies but I grew up watching these (on VHS) along with the first three Star Wars movies (IV-VI). The Ewok movies are still awesome. Love'em. Laserdisc versions are by far the best!

At least the Ewok movies are better than Star Wars Ep. 1-3....IMO.

Oh my God... This topic has opened a can of worms my friend!

I'm a HUGE laserdisc whore!!! I have 222 movies and counting including both the Special Edition and the Definitive Collection of Star Wars (9 discs!!!), Sleepy Hollow (the last LD released in the US), both box sets of Terminator 2, Amadeus Pioneer Special Edition (only 10,000 produced) and so many others! My player is a Pioneer CLD-A100. Yes. The LaserActive. I only have one LD game though, Pyramid Patrol. This topic is officially amazing.

BTW, S-Video serves absolutely no purpose with LD. I've tried different TV's both standard and HD and composite looks identical to S-Video, just FYI. And all LD's look terrible on HD TV's. XD

But the audio of laserdisc is actually superior to DVD. Since the disc is freaking 12 inches across the audio doesn't need to be compressed like DVD's. So if you have a DTS LD vs. a DVD you WILL hear a clearer, crisper difference. DTS LD's go for about $40 a piece for this reason.

Anyway, glad to meet another LD enthusiast!!! You should check out the LDDB. Laserdisc database. It's just like VGMDB but LD's and HD-DVD's and other dead formats. You can set up a collection page there.

Boy, this topic died... But I'll go ahead and post anyway that Monday evening I continued my annual tradition of watching Sleepy Hollow on laserdisc. The last commercially released LD in the US.

I''ve got a lot more LD's since my last post, I don't post pics of every LD I get.

Recent pick ups....Dead Alive, A Simple Plan, The Ghostbusters, Robot Jox, Labyrinth...and a fuck ton of others.

My main goal has been tracking down a copy of Ghost in the Shell and Trinity Is Still My Name. These two Laserdiscs elude me.

Then again LD's have been on the back burner for now. I've been trying to build up my Tachikoma army.

Ghost in the Shell shouldn't be too hard... Course, I haven't tried to find one in a few years. But I have one! Great edition, all CAV, some bonus materials. And which Ghostbusters did you get? There is a standard edition plus 2 different Criterion Collections versions. You can tell by either the red or blue bar at the top where Criterion Collection is written. Also full of some great bonues, some that have never been on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Didn't you have to flip the laserdics in the middle of some longer films?

A buddy of mine used to have a laserdisc player when we were growing up, I've been scarred for life

Star Trek Deep Space Nine Laserdisc box sets...I have two so far, Season One Vol. 2, and Season Three Vol. 2. I have Season 4 Vol. 1 and 2 on the way. I've been buying these way out of order because these bastards are hard to find for a good price....I love this show so it's worth it. =D

Spin of both sets.
