This album strikes me as a bit questionable.

My basic understanding is that he started with the midi files from the PC game, but played them on a midi player with much nicer samples for each instrument.

Maybe I don't understand the world of remixing, but this seems like a game rip to me, where the game was played on souped up hardware.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds very nice. I just wonder if it should have an entry.

agreed, although it sounds like he imported the sequences into a DAW and used sample libraries rather than a midi player. the sequence data seems basically the same aside from some missing percussion sounds (they are probably missing because he didn't know what percussion midi notes below B0 were meant to be, due to the PC version midis being intended for XG-compatible midi devices, which have a different percussion map below B0.)

there's probably other releases of this nature as well. the 'lazy' approach to arrangement is nothing new, but to reject albums based on technical merit (or lack of it) is treading on thin ice. i don't know what the solution is... I guess i think it's better to leave users to decide, even though it seems obvious what's going on here.

i'm of the opposite opinion anyway - i think this easily sounds worse than the properly-supported XG midis do. :b

I had honestly no idea that it was just made from original files, I didn't quite read the topic. But yeah, if that's the case, I think it should be removed off the site.

Well, I don't know for certain that it was made from the original files. That's just what it sounds like. I used to listen to the FFVII PC midis a lot, and played around with different midi patches on the old wavetable soundcards.

EDIT - After reading Blitz Lunar's post, it looks like we are more certain now.

If it does, then we'll open the door for more entries from other "remastered" soundtracks. This certainly does not belong here.

EDIT: Unless it's an official release, of course. But that's obviously not the matter in question here.
