Default Suggestion of 1-5 rating scale, rather than 1-10

I know a number of people have done significant album voting, but would hope that doesn't hinder an objective discussion on this.

I wish there was a 1-5 album rating system rather than 1-10. 1-10 is too wide of a range and too arbitrary. Collective opinion is inconsistent on whether 5 is average or 7 (i.e. 70=C grade=average), which skews votes.

1-5 encourages more of a traditional star rating system, where 3 is a more clearly defined average. The average score could simply have more decimal places, probably 3. Before the 1-10 system is too ingrained, we really should consider wiping existing scores and switching to 1-5 for what would be a more consistently interpreted grading standard.

I've never liked the 5 star rating system, because it's too "compressed." Whenever I watch that one game-review show on G4, I can tell that they are going to give the game a "2" or a "4" based on what they say. I know the icons for 7-10 are kind of hard to differentiate, but the star images are going to be replaced eventually.

I'd like to hear what everyone thinks about the voting though. If everyone despises the 10 point system to the point that they actively don't vote, then obviously it'll have to be changed. It could even be a cosmetic change (divide everything by 2, but still have 10 divisions, with 4.5, 3.5, etc.)

I prefer 10 points, because just like SS said, it's too compressed with 5, and it's hard to pinpoint your score down

I am glad to hear that the stars are going to be changed out though, cause it's hard to keep track of how many are given when there is alot of them

I'd have no problem with going the .5 route since that's half a star. It would still make the feeling of the system a lot less arbitrary while not drastically altering the existing system.

I'd like the .5 divisions myself, for aesthetic reasons. 10 stars is an eyeful

This is my reasoning in preferring a ten grade system as well. As long as we keep the star system though, I agree that using a ten grade system with .5 decimals would make it a lot easier to distinguish the score.

I like the .5 decimals idea too. 1to5 only would not be enough.
10 divisions is the good choice i think.

Okay, for some experimentation, I switched the voting system over to a 5 star one, with 10 divisions (i.e. half star voting.) The switch is cosmetic, as the ratings are still scored out of 10 internally. I also cobbled together a cheesy new set of stars to try things out. The change should be visible everywhere that ratings are displayed - album pages, artist pages, and the stat tables, but let me know if I missed anything.

As long as it's not changed to a 3 star rating (a la GFX), I like both 5 (with the .5's) and 10 star rating. It's about the same, just cosmetically different. I'd agree with Blah about 10 stars being a lot to see though.

I actually preferred the 10 point system, but this is alright. I like the note replacement, though I hope the colors will be changed. In the rating menu, there's too little contrast to make out the notes properly.

Yeah, Miles added the XBox Live Leaderboard to GFF which featured these stars with quarter divisions. They looked great so SS plugged it in.

What I can't give a 0 rating to an album?

There are some clunkers out there.

0.5 should be fine for that purpose >_>

I mean, it probably came in a case with some artwork, that's gotta count for something.
