I'm confused... was this only available for an extremely limited time? I'm not even seeing it for sale on the official site...

Apparently a very early Sega sound designer.

Updated with incomplete credits from Yosuke Okunari's comments in the booklet. All the artist info currently in the notes comes from there except for Star Jacker (for which we have arcade credits apparently) and Out Run (Okunari doesn't name anyone for some reason, but we know who did this from the box set).

Enjoy the new info, Sega nerds!

The new info is very interesting. Never realised Nakabayashi joined in 1984, nor the fact Kawaguchi worked on a SMS game. Too bad there isn't a composer breakdown for Girl's Garden, which I'm surprised has two composers, especially given how small the game is.

Also, I've added Uwabo and Naka as arrangers, due to porting (I guess this counts as arranging) the music to SMS.

I'm not certain if Okunari intended a rigorous difference between the two or is just being loose and describing the general process of porting music in different ways, but he uses different words for "arrangement" (編曲) and "porting"/"conversion" (移植). This isn't the only Sega album I've seen it done; the Out Run and After Burner boxes also distinguish between the two, in English no less.

To respect the difference in wording, on all three of these albums I ended up linking the people explicitly credited with arrangement as arrangers, but the porters as just programmers. So that's why I didn't have Uwabo & Naka in the arrangement field. The album does still show up in both of their discographies for programming (and composition in Uwabo's case, of course).

Kazuhiko Nagai just uploaded a video of the SDI DEMO tune. I asked him about it, and he says he remembers porting it. Seems it's probably the only track from the game he worked on.

I remember porting it. When I checked it with this software / plug-in, I remembered the song I made.

I noticed a weird mention as I was going through Okunari's comments again. For BLACK BELT, he mentions this
Quote:
当時サウンドは林と上保の2 名が家庭用メインとなり、しばらくほとんどのゲームを 2 人で手がけた。
Quote:
Hayashi and Uwabo were the 2 names in charge of main sound for consoles, and for a while the 2 worked on most games together.
Just note that he doesn't credit Uwabo for music, he separately credits the music of BLACK BELT to Hayashi (probably meaning both the HOKUTO NO KEN and BLACK BELT versions).

I'm not even sure if the Uwabo mention is related specifically to BLACK BELT. Made me think at first that the sound effects were Uwabo's? But it does come right after GHOST HOUSE which is the last game until Aztec Adventure not done by either of those two.

So it may just mean that, with some rare exceptions, every SG-1000 and Master System game from mid-1986 to mid-1987 was either Hayashi's or Uwabo's (note that Kazuhiko Nagai's known Master System debut is a bit earlier but still mid-1987).

Just for the heck of it I made a list of everything in-between those games, Hokuto no Ken and Aztec Adventure.

Spoiler:

SG-1000
1986
  • 09 The Castle

1987
  • 02 Loretta no Shouzou: Sherlock Holmes
  • 03 The Black Onyx - Tokuhiko Uwabo

Mark III/Master System
1986
  • 07 Gokuaku Doumei Dump Matsumoto / Pro Wrestling
  • 08 Action Fighter - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 09 Spy vs Spy
  • 09 The Circuit / World Grand Prix
  • 09 (US) Safari Hunt
  • 09 (US) Teddy Boy (needed licensed music replacing)
  • 11 Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 11 The Ninja
  • 11 Ashura / Rambo: First Blood Part II / Secret Command - Katsuhiro Hayashi
  • 12 Astro Warrior
  • 12 High School! Kimengumi - Katsuhiro Hayashi
  • 12 Great Golf
  • 12 Space Harrier - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 12 (US) Great Ice Hockey
  • 12 (US) Marksman Shooting - Katsuhiro Hayashi
  • 12 (US) Trap Shooting - Katsuhiro Hayashi

1987
  • 01 Quartet - Katsuhiro Hayashi (is that confirmed or just a rumour?)
  • 03 Woody Pop - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 03 Wonder Boy
  • 03 (US) Shooting Gallery
  • 03 Great Basketball
  • 03 Great Volleyball - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 04 Rocky
  • 04 Sukeban Deka II - Tokuhiko Uwabo
  • 04 Great Football
  • 05 Makai Retsuden / Kung Fu Kid
  • 05 Enduro Racer
  • 05 Akai Koudan Zillion - Kazuhiko Nagai
  • 05 (US) Ghostbusters - Tohru Nakabayashi
  • 06 OutRun - Yuji Naka half-credited on OutRun 20th Anniversary Box, Hiro's comments on that say they don't know who did it. Uwabo might have done it since T.U is in the high scores.
  • 07 Anmitsu Hime
  • 07 World Soccer / Great Soccer
  • 08 The Pro Yakyuu: Pennant Race
  • 08 Doki Doki Penguin Land: Uchuu Daibouken / Penguin Land - In-game ROM credits Sound Maker-S.TATEISHI
  • 08 (US) Gangster Town
  • 08 (US) Missile Defense 3-D

Keep in mind, I'm pretty sure Sachio Ogawa joined in 1987 same as Kamatani, so might also have contributed to some stuff after June-ish.
