You can't leave the year blank and I couldn't find information online for it, but the year code is "E" (E・4・21). The series came out in 89 so it's purely just a guess since you can't leave the year blank.

If someone has a list of the alphabetical year codes for reference I can use it in the future. I remember seeing one somewhere but I don't recall where.

Could it have something to do with the fact that 1989 was the first year of the Heisei era, or perhaps the last of the Showa era?
