I have been checking the .bms music files for Luigi's Mansion with the help of a hex editor, and noticed that each track makes use of one of two specific sound banks (shown as either "A4 20 04" or "A4 20 06" in the code); according to the internal index number, they appear in the following order, along with the corresponding banks appropriated:
Spoiler:
Now, while I don't believe the sound banks have initials or any kind of identifiers of who was in charge of each (unlike other GameCube EAD titles), it does seem to me that: -The tracks using A4 20 04 were probably done by Kazumi Totaka, as they sound similar to his work on other titles (Yoshi's Story, Mario Artist series, etc.). "Title Screen (Humming)" (aka Main Theme), "Professor E. Gadd's Lab", and "Boo Escape" are at least comfirmed to be his. -On the other hand, the tracks using A4 20 06 were done by Shinobu Tanaka, as they sound similar to her work on other contemporaneous titles (Super Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing event BGM). Therefore, the list of music as presented on Nintendo Music would look like this with that credit attribution: Spoiler:
On a side note, I find it really weird that the main theme (refered to specifically as メインテーマ(鼻歌) in the Japanese version of the app) has been localized as "Title Theme (Humming)", considering this has really not much of a connection with the actual Title Theme; I wonder if this is some kind of oversight? Also worth mentioning that the "LuigiSings" bms file actually contains all possible permutations of the main theme (different mansion rooms, balcony, observatory, with different humming depending on the health, etc.), but Nintendo Music only presents the standard variation of the theme with the Luigi humming that was present on the CD soundtracks. |

That's some great research. I subscribe to most of that - though I'm wondering about the unused Pianissima Totaka's Song rendition, does that adhere to the soundbank convention? I think if that one uses the same one that Tanaka used, this could potentially complicate the reliability of the breakdown. "Boss Ghost: Boolossus" also struck me as leaning more Totaka-esque than Tanaka with its instrumentation (though it could still certainly be the case).
EDIT: I see now it is included in the first Spoiler dropdown. Yeah I feel like it using the same bank may cast a bit of doubt on it being such a clean split. I agree that most of it does seem to break down correctly, though. Last edited by MIDIWIZI; Apr 10, 2025 at 10:02 PM. |
